What are clomiphene capsules used for?
Clomiphene can be used by both women and men. The medication is used for different purposes when used in men than when used in women.
Clomiphene for women is used to treat infertility. More specifically, it is used to induce ovulation in women thereby increasing the chances of conceiving.
Clomiphene for men may also be used to help treat infertility but can also be used to boost testosterone levels.
For both men and women, the product may be used off-label in bodybuilding.
What is clomiphene’s mechanism of action when used to treat infertility in women?
In the treatment of infertility in women clomiphene is used to induce ovulation. But how does it induce ovulation?
Clomiphene citrate works by being a selective estrogen receptor modulator. It is a competitive inhibitor of estrogen binding to estrogen receptors. It has both agonist (activates the receptor) and antagonist (blocks the receptor) functions. How clomiphene acts at the receptor depends in what tissue the receptor is located in.
It is the antiestrogenic effects of clomiphene in the pituitary and hypothalamus that causes the stimulation gonadotropin secretion. It is the blocking of the negative feedback of estrogen in the hypothalamus that leads to increased gonadotropin release.
The main gonadotropin for ovulation is follicle stimulating hormone (FSH). Increased FSH leads to the growth of the ovarian follicle and in turn leads to ovulation.
What are clomiphene capsules mechanism of action when used in men?
When used in men it is also the antiestrogenic effects of clomiphene within the pituitary-hypothalamus that creates the beneficial effects in men. Basically, like it does in women, the clomiphene binds to the estrogen receptor in the pituitary gland and blocks estrogens effects.
In men, a small amount of testosterone in converted into estrogen. This estrogen creates an off signal in the pituitary gland to stop making gonadotropins.
The gonadotropins are biological chemicals that signal the testicles to produce more testosterone. So as you can see if the estrogenic “off” signal is blocked then more gonadotropins are released from the pituitary to signal the testes and therefore more testosterone is produced.
Increased testosterone helps those men suffering from Low-T. In men trying to treat male infertility the higher testosterone levels stimulate increased sperm production.
So as you can see in men you can use clomiphene for low testosterone and you can also use clomiphene for male infertility. Also as an off-label use you can use clomiphene for bodybuilding.

Clomiphene side effects include:

- abnormal vaginal bleeding
