Testosterone Topical Cream

What is testosterone?

Testosterone is typically thought of as the male sex hormone.  Now, while testosterone is the major male sex hormone, it is not exclusive to men.  Women also have, and need, testosterone in their bodies.

Testosterone belongs to a group of sex hormones known as androgens.  Testosterone is the most common androgen.  Other androgens include androstenedione, dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), DHEA sulfate (DHEA-S) and dihydrotestosterone (DHT).

Testosterone in women?  Really?

Although it is the major male sex hormone, testosterone is not just a male hormone.  In fact, testosterone is very overlooked for its importance in women’s health.

Testosterone is important in women for sex drive (libido), maintenance of bone and muscle mass, heart health and an overall sense of well-being.

Women only produce about 10% of the testosterone of men.  Between the ages of 20 and 40 years, the production of testosterone falls by approximately 50% in women and falls further up until menopause.  Testosterone production stabilizes after menopause.

Each pregnancy a woman has also reduces testosterone production.

When free testosterone levels in the blood drop below a certain level the symptoms of androgen insufficiency can be experienced.  These symptoms include depressed mood, lack of motivation, lowered sex drive, lowered energy levels (fatigue) and a lack of a sense of well-being or zest for life.

What are the benefits of testosterone replacement therapy?

The benefits of testosterone supplementation include:

  • an increased sense of well-being
  • increased self-confidence and well-being
  • feeling more motivated
  • having more energy
  • improved mood
  • beneficial effects on the brain (mental sharpness)
  • increased bone formation
  • improvements in muscle mass
  • improved libido (sex drive)

Why use testosterone topical cream instead of taking an oral pill?

Oral therapy with testosterone is not recommended.  There are side effects seen with oral testosterone that are not experienced when testosterone is used topically.

Some side effects seen with oral testosterone include elevated blood pressure, elevated red blood cell levels, blood clotting problems, lipid profile changes, headaches and upper respiratory tract infections.

Also with a testosterone topical cream and the Topi-Click applicator the testosterone dosing can be very precisely individualized and adjusted as necessary.

Other testosterone replacement options include testosterone patches or testosterone injections.  Testosterone patches are a set dose and make it difficult to individualize and adjust dosing.  Testosterone injections can be painful and inconvenient, especially for those who don’t like injections.

Testosterone Topical Cream in Men

Men suffering from low testosterone levels will also experience the symptoms of androgen insufficiency.  These symptoms are very similar to the symptoms experienced in women but can be even more pronounced.

Again, these symptoms include depressed mood, lack of motivation, lowered sex drive, lowered energy levels (fatigue), difficulty maintaining muscle mass and a lack of a sense of well-being or zest for life.
