Quit Smoking With Your Manitoba Pharmacist

By jeremy

What is the Quit Smoking With Your Manitoba Pharmacist program?

Quit Smoking With Your Manitoba Pharmacist is a new smoking cessation program created in a cooperative venture between the Manitoba government and Pharmacists Manitoba.

This program is essentially a pilot project to see if pharmacist-led smoking cessation programs provide real value to the patients and to governments and insurance programs.  If it can be shown that pharmacists do indeed help patients to quit smoking then it makes sense for the government or insurance plans to pay pharmacists for such services.

If you are a Manitoba resident over the age of 18 and you smoke cigarettes and would like to quit this program may be of benefit to you.

What evidence is there that pharmacist-led quit smoking programs work?

One study published in 2009 titled “Randomized Trial Assessing the Effectiveness of a Pharmacist-Delivered Program for Smoking Cessation” by Larry A Dent et al found the following:

“This study demonstrates that pharmacists are effective providers of tobacco cessation interventions. Greater utilization of pharmacists in tobacco cessation efforts could have a significant impact on smoking rates, prevention of tobacco-related diseases, and overall improvement in public health across the US.”

Another study, from 2014, which basically analyzed and summarized all other available studies on pharmacist-based smoking cessation programs titled “Meta-analysis of the effectiveness of smoking cessation interventions in community pharmacy” by M. Saba PharmD et al, concluded the following:

“Pharmacist-led interventions can significantly impact abstinence rates in smokers. Health policymakers should direct incentives for community pharmacists to provide such services.”

So from just these two studies we can see that pharmacist-led quit smoking programs can really help people to quit smoking.
